CHAPTER 15
NATALIE
I sweep the dimly lit space with a practiced eye, senses heightened. A plain single bed, a bedside table with a half-eaten microwavable meal, a sofa, TVâand on that sofa crouches the startled young woman I heard Alessa refer to as Sienna, her eyes wide as she looks between Alessa and me.
Sheâs so young. So young.
A thousand terrible thoughts flood my mind: Alessaâs trafficking her, sheâs been kidnapped, this is all a front for something far darker.
I turn to Alessa, taking in the fear darkening her usually bright green eyes. She lifts her hands in supplication like Iâm the one with the gun. âLet me explain, Natalie. I promise you, itâs not what you think.â
My gaze snaps back to Sienna. Her breathing comes fast and shallow, muscles coiled tight. Dark hair falls across frightened eyes.
âAre you okay?â I ask Sienna, my gaze locked on her, trying to gauge if sheâs being coerced.
âY-yes,â she stammers, but her eyes donât leave Alessa.
âSienna is here of her own free will,â Alessa insists, more calmly than I think she would if she was lying.
âIs that true?â I demand, needing to hear it from Sienna herself.
âYes,â Sienna reiterates, more firmly this time. âAlessaâs helping me.â Her voice trembles still, but she seems to be telling the truth.
âWhy did you follow me in here?â Alessa asks, something close to despair in her tone.
I think fast. The best defense, as they say⦠âI saw you walking by,â I say, keeping an edge of suspicion in my voice. âI went after you because I thought you hadnât seen me.â
What really happened was, I snuck after her, avoided Liana the hostess as she crossed into the club to look for me, and caught the security door just before it closed.
âAlessa, what is going on here?â I demand again, hands on my hips. âWho is this poor girl, and whyââ
âItâs a long story,â Alessa says. âIâllâIâll explain, just give me a moment. Please. If youâd wait outside?â
I fix Alessa with a hard look, but I nod. âIâll wait outside, but Iâm going to need answers.â
âThank you,â Alessa breathes out, relief washing over her features. âI promise Iâll explain everything.â
I lean against the wall in the corridor, trying to steady my breathing. My thoughts race, and I canât shake the feeling that thereâs more to this situation than meets the eye. Over the sound of my own heartbeat, I catch Alessaâs voice speaking softly through the slightly ajar door.
âSienna, it wonât be long now,â she reassures, her tone warm and gentle.
âPromise?â Siennaâs voice is small.
âPromise. Now, I need you to stay here just a little longer. Can you do that for me?â
âOkay,â Sienna sighs.
The click of the lock echoes down the hallway as Alessa exits the safe room. She casts one quick, nervous glance at the door before turning to me, her eyes pleading for understanding. âCome with me,â she sighs.
I follow her out, senses alert for any sign of deception. The security door locks behind us with a dull, heavy thud.
